Harvester Ants:
Introduction:
These seed and vegetation gathering ants are among the largest of ants growing to 1/2 inch in length and can cause great crop damage. While common in urban areas, the Harvester Ants may bee found elsewhere with nests ranging in size to 12,000 workers usually found in open areas near food sources.
Identification:
This ant can be found in colors ranging from reddish brown to black with sizes up to 1/2 inch.
Reproduction:
During mating season both the female and male may be found with wings as they look for a new nesting site. Shortly after mating the male will die leaving the female to loose her wings, burrow into a new next area to become queen and start laying her eggs.
Feeding and habitat:
The Harvester Ant as its' name implies is a harvester. While a diligent worker, it unfortunately enjoys feeding on our agricultural crops reducing plant productivity. These pests nest for the long term going as deep as 15 feet near planted crops but also enjoy living near and in ornamental turf and landscape areas. If unchecked they move in under concrete slabs porches, and in the lawns too.
